Leslie Phillips, the British actor in Carry On movie and more recognized as the voice of the Sorting Hat in Harry Potter has died at the age of 98.

Phillips died "peacefully in his sleep" on Monday, his agent in the UK, Jonathan Lloyd, confirmed to the PA news agency.

Phillips' wife, Zara, separately told, "I've lost a wonderful husband and the public has lost a truly great showman."

His first film appearance came in the 1930s, but it did not fare well after the war.

Declining an opportunity to move to Hollywood, she starred in three Carry On films: Carry On Nurse, Carry On Teacher, and Carry On Constable.

Younger generations, however, recognize Phillips' voice from the Harry Potter movies as he voices the Sorting Hat.

Phillips suffered a stroke eight years ago but is said to have made a strong recovery.

Phillips was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2008 in recognition of his acting career.
