Sunak, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer of Britain, was a near-certain winner after former Prime Minister Boris Johnson withdrew from the race.

By last night, Sunak had already announced 140 MPs on his side. He was well placed to win the support of a majority of Conservative Party MPs.

Johnson claimed to have the support of 100 MPs but cast doubt on press reports and said he managed to muster around 50 votes.

Their doubts appear to have been validated by Johnson's late-night withdrawal from the race despite insisting he had enough votes to stay in the race.

By yesterday it was clear that Sunac had the support of various groups in the Conservative Party, with centrist MPs and right-wing Suella Braverman on his side.

Braverman had resigned last week from Prime Minister Liz Truss's government.
